Battling Boy by Paul Pope is a graphic novel set in the city of Acropolis. This isn’t the ancient Greek one, by the way. It’s a different one. Anyway, this Acropolis has a real problem with monsters. They roam the city and eat unattended children. The only person who could defend the city from the monsters was the inventor Haggard West. Unfortunately, Haggard West is dead. His teenage daughter Aurora West inherited everything, and she’s trying to figure out how his stuff works on her own.

Meanwhile, in another realm, a boy is about to turn 13, which means that he’s to be sent on his rambling, which is a coming of age quest. He’s called Battling Boy, and he’s sent to Acropolis. Here’s what he arrives with: [when booktalking I read aloud and show the page where he reveals his gifts from his parents]

Aurora West and Battling Boy must team up to take on the monsters of Acropolis. But will it be enough? Check out Battling Boy by Paul Pope if you’re a fan of mythological adventures like Percy Jackson, if you like classic comic like Batman and Thor, or if you’re just looking for a fun story. Also, look out for the next book in the series, The Rise of Aurora West.
