Nate Foster, the star of Better Nate than Ever by Tim Federle–and, he hopes, the future star of ET the musical, on Broadway, is a kid with a lot of plans. And all of them depend on getting out of Jankburg, Pennsylvania.

With help from his resourceful friend Libby, Nate sneaks off for an overnight trip to New York City, where he auditions for ET the musical. He plans to sleep on the bus, audition first thing in the morning, and get back to Jankburg before his parents are even back from their anniversary getaway.

When he gets to the auditions, though, he realizes that he wasn’t prepared to compete with the kids who go to performance arts schools and have intense stage moms. The casting assistant says, “Unless you’ve got an adult to vouch for you today, don’t waste our time. This is Broadway. This isn’t Jankburg, Pennsylvania,” and Nate’s Broadway dreams are crushed before they even got started.

Until his Aunt Heidi, a struggling actress who Nate hasn’t seen since he was a toddler, comes to save the day. Nate ends up with a new aunt, his first real Broadway audition, and a chance to explore the greatest city in the world, a city where they sell pretzels on the street. Can you imagine?

The book’s author, Tim Federle, played a seagull in The Little Mermaid on Broadway, so he provides a hilarious insider look at the world of Broadway. You can also follow Nate’s further adventures in the sequel, Five Six Seven Nate.
