How many of you guys like to cook? Any Food Network fans out there? So some of you might already recognize Marcus Samuelsson–he won Top Chef Masters and is often a judge on Chopped. But his life story is just as interesting as the food he makes.Even though he’s a very successful chef now, when he was a kid, Marcus thought of himself as a failure. he played competitive soccer very seriously, and he was on a local youth team that was a feeder team for his city’s professional league. Marcus thought he was good enough to become a professional soccer player, but when he was 16 he was cut from the team. His coach told him that even though he was a great player, he was too small to be a professional player.

So Marcus had to decide what else he wanted to do with his life, and he realized he loved to cook. If you’ve seen him on cooking shows, you might already know that Marcus was born in Ethiopia and lived there until his was three, when he was adopted by a Swedish family, so he cooks food that combines things from Ethopian and Swedish food. But while he was learning to become a chef, he traveled around and worked at restaurants in Switzerland, Germany, France, and New York. This is the story of Marcus’s life from his soccer-playing childhood up until he got his first job as executive chef, at the age of 25 (which I know sounds kinda old to you guys but it’s really young to be the executive chef of a fancy restaurant). I’d definitely recommend this book to anyone who is already a fan of Marcus from Chopped and Top Chef, but even if you’re not interested in cooking, he still has a really interesting story, and it’s inspiring to see that even if your Plan A doesn’t work out, and your life seems a little messy, you can still find success.
