You guys probably all know how to be popular, right? Like, you ladies would never go to school without wearing a girdle, and you always wear a string of pearls to school dances, right?

Maya Van Wagenen is a real girl who lives in Texas. She was never very popular at school. She had her best friend, Kenzie, but not a lot of other friends. Then she found a book at a thrift store–Betty Cornell’s Teen-Age Popularity Guide, written in 1954. As a social experiment, she decided to follow all of Betty Cornell’s tips for her whole 8th grade year. Some of the 50s advice seems really silly now, but some of it actually worked for Maya. She wrote this book based on the diary she kept during her 8th grade popularity experiment. Popular is sometimes a very funny read–like when she goes girdle shopping–but also has some serious advice for how to make friends and feel better for yourself.
