This one goes out to all the Twilight-haters. Mel, the protagonist of Team Human by Justine Larbalestier and Sarah Rees Brennan, would definitely hate Twilight if it existed in her world. Mel lives in New Whitby, a city that was founded by vampires, but that doesn’t means she likes vampires. She hates them, and she thinks it’s so stupid how everybody thinks vampires are so romantic.

The nice thing is that at least she doesn’t have to see vampires every day. Mostly, they stay in their part of town, and the humans stay in their part of town. Until a vampire named Francis shows up at Mel’s school, ugh. Vampires don’t have to go to high school, so why would they? Mel finds it suspicious, especially when her best friend Cathy falls for Francis immediately. Mel also happens to be friends with Anna, the principal’s daughter, so she gets the inside scoop. Francis is only attending their high school because he wants to write a book about the effects of vampires on teenage humans! Mel wants to convince Cathy to stay way from Francis, but she doesn’t want to hurt Cathy’s feelings by telling her directly. Plus, strange occurrences start happening at school, like the cafeteria being mysteriously overrun with rats. Mel suspects Francis is involved, but she needs more proof. She doesn’t want people to think she’s just prejudiced against vampires, after all.

Team Human is a funny adventure story that will appeal to anyone who doesn’t understand the hype of Twilight. Of course… it might appeal to fans of Twilight, too, because even though Mel doesn’t understand Francis’s dreaminess… fans of Edward Cullen just might anyway.
