Ask An Agent: Good Conferences Beyond the Big Ones?

askanagent2You’ve got questions,  we’ve got answers! Our volunteer Agents are on the job! Here’s what they have to say this week….

Question:  Other than the big conferences (ALA, YALSA, PLA, state and regional library conferences, BEA), what other events or professional development opportunities do the agents recommend?

Doris Jean (Chemung County Library District) says:

If your library is part of a  library system or district that  offers trainings, I encourage you to attend those.  If they don’t have any “teen services” oriented trainings, let them know that you are interested in them providing some!  Professional (ALA, YALSA, etc) webinars and archived continuing education offerings are also valuable, especially since most of us can’t afford to go to many (or ANY!) big conferences.

Andrea (TSU) says:

Definetely see what your state and surrounding states offer, I’ve often found good things there. It really depends on what you want to focus one. For example, last year I went to a pretty good conference on how to become a better leader/manger called Power UP, but that would only be valuable if you were after that. If you’re looking for more webinars, check out (School) Library Journal. They had a wide range of topics that they offer.

If you have a question about anything teen services related ask it here! Your question will be featured on the blog with answers from our agent volunteers or TSU team members. If you’d like to be a volunteer agent, please submit your info here.
